The Stowmarket Art Club was formed in 1959 by a few local artists who wanted to meet on a regular basis to exchange ideas and develop their skills in art.

The first meeting took place at the Royal Oak public house in Stowmarket where a blonde female model in a swimsuit was hired for the evening. This attracted not only Anglia TV (in b&w) but also quite a few non-artists! See photo.

Brian Lilley, our Club President for the last eight years, was at that first meeting and has been with the club ever since.

Welcome to our website

Please browse through the pages and we hope that you enjoy the experience.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please email them to us, we will be very pleased to receive them.

Members are of all ages and sexes, and usually bring along a painting or a drawing that they are currently working on. The standard of work is immaterial - It's all about people enjoying a hobby and improving their art.

Everyone does their own thing and though there are no tutors present there is always someone to ask for help.

From that lively beginning we have continued to entertain and flourish, we now have over 70 members.

The meetings are held in the St Stephen's Church Hall, which is spacious and comfortable.

Some people may find Perspective a bit of a problem and occasionally we have a demonstration given by the President Brian Lilley that is invaluable.

We also have a very sociable coffee break after an hour and then continue for another hour finishing just after nine o clock.

Demonstration evenings are always well attended and occasionally we have a slide show on an artistic theme.

Art can be great fun and a source of enjoyment!

It's also a way of meeting new people and making new friends with similar interests.
